Rainbow Health Initiative e-Learning Program

We currently offer three e-learning modules to provide you with the fundamentals of LGBTQ health equity. No matter what your role is in the health and human services sector, you can learn the basics of working with LGBTQ communities through these online courses.

Each course features videos, interactive animations, PDF documents, as well as guides of how to implement LGBTQ inclusive practices in your clinic or organization. While each course is designed to last approximately 60-90 minutes, they are self-paced. It is your choice to complete it all at once or take the weekend! Once enrolled, there is no deadline to complete each module. As a bonus, you will have on-going access to each module you enroll in, even after you complete it.   

These courses are free. Once our e-learning program is accredited to award CME credit there will be an administrative fee of $25 per course if you need continuing medical education credits.

Module 1 - Introduction to LGBTQ Equity and Inclusion
The purpose of this module is to teach health care providers, clinic staff, as well as administrators and policy makers about the fundamentals of the LGBTQ communities and best practices working with these communities. 

The following learning outcomes guide the content of the Introduction to LGBTQ Equity and Inclusion e-learning module. By the end, learners should:  

  • Be able to describe the three concepts that comprise sexual orientation
  • Be able to describe the three concepts that comprise gender identity
  • Be able to state LGBTQ health data
  • Be able to describe 8 best practices working with LGBTQ communities 


Module 2 - Collecting Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity Data 
The purpose of this module is to teach health care providers about the importance of collecting SO/GI data, the types of data to collect, and methods for collecting the data. Additionally, the module aims to shine a light on the health disparities LGBTQ folks are facing in Minnesota, in hopes that this information will equip health care providers to more inclusively serve the LGBTQ community.

The following learning outcomes guide the content of the Collecting Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity Data e-learning module. By the end of the module, learners should be able to: 

  • Explain the rationale for collecting sexual orientation and gender identity data 
  • Identify LGBTQ health disparities in Minnesota 
  • Identify three opportunities where a clinic can offer clients the opportunity to self-report sexual orientation and gender identity data 


Module 3 - Implicit Association and LGBTQ Healthcare
The purpose of this module is to teach health care providers about implicit association, introduce a valid assessment tool to measure implicit association, as well as provide evidence-based activities that care providers can practice to alter any implicit associations they may hold regarding LGBTQ clients.

The following learning outcomes guide the content of the Implicit Association and LGBTQ Healthcare e-learning module. By the end of the module, learners should be able to:

  • Describe implicit association.
  • Describe the ways in which implicit association can affect clients' healthcare.
  • Describe strategies to change implicit association.

To participate in our e-learning program we recommend users have access to a computer with a minimum of the following installed on the device:
