Rainbow Health Initiative's goal is to prepare a community based report, including recommendations, which will address the prevalence of tobacco use, awareness of use, and exposure hazards, perceptions regarding cessation resources, and knowledge and attitudes toward tobacco free policies in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community. Operating on the assumption that the GLBT community is a collection of inter-related and autonomous sub-groups, the project is designed to formalize and expand the networks within the community in order to gather information from all its parts. The backbone of the report will be prepared using results from surveys obtained in a variety of settings, information received from thirteen focus groups, and knowledge gained from collaborative dialogues and interviews with businesses, non-profits, and health-care providers serving the GLBT community. Results from these project activities will be presented at a community celebration near the end of the project in the fall of 2005. The process of gathering information will also help to develop a "community" around the issue of tobacco and provide a path whereby tobacco control efforts can best reach the GLBT community and its component sub-groups. This project is funded by the Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco (MPAAT).
